Air Abrasion-Drill Free Dentistry (KCP)

The KCP is a more pain-free alternative to the traditional drill. Also called air abrasion dentistry or “micro dentistry” (minimally invasive), it enables Dr. Logmann to remove decay by conserving as much of the healthy tooth structure as possible.

The KCP is a precise and gentle procedure that replaces drilling in many procedures. Using a super-fine abrasive powder (a pure, biocompatible substance used in toothpaste) the equipment works like a miniature sandblaster to spray away the decay. The decay is “vacuumed” away thru suction. This procedure is less invasive than traditional drilling. Without the noise, vibration, and heat caused by drilling and by controlling the speed and intensity of the powder and compressed air, you often don’t need an anesthetic.

After the tooth is clean, Dr. Logmann will fill the tooth using a nearly invisible non-mercury filling making the tooth strong.

We also use the KCP in preparing teeth for veneers, removing stains and spots, repairing old composite fillings and sealants, and repairing broken crowns or bridges.

Dr. Logmann was the first dentist in NW Indiana to offer KCP technology. He has lectured on this type of air abrasion and has been in newspaper articles. Dr. Logmann views air-abrasion as a wonderful alternative to the conventional drill.

Drill-Free, White Restorations (tooth colored fillings)

Porcelain or composite resin (a strong synthetic plastic-like substance) is carefully chosen to match your tooth's natural color and is used as a filling material instead of the silver mercury fillings of the past.

Both porcelain and composite-resin bonds securely to your tooth, so the restorations are extremely strong and durable. Also, because they are bonded, Dr. Logmann can be more conservative when he prepares your tooth for the filling, so you retain more of your natural, healthy tooth.

Custom Dentures

Dentures replace all or some of your teeth and are made to resemble your natural teeth, so there will be little change in your appearance. They are removable and usually need to be periodically relined to fit your gum and bone structure as you age.

The two main types of dentures are conventional and immediate dentures. Conventional dentures are made and inserted after the remaining teeth have been extracted and the tissues have healed, which can take several months. Immediate dentures are inserted right after the removal of some or all of the teeth. Dr. Logmann will have already taken measurements of your jaw at a prior appointment. The obvious advantage to immediate dentures is that you don’t ever have to be without teeth. However, since healing may affect the fit of immediate dentures, they may require further adjustments to fit properly.

Learning to wear your new dentures can take time. Even the best-fitting dentures may feel awkward at first.

Custom Crowns

A crown is a dental restoration that covers or “caps” a tooth to restore it to its normal shape, size, and function. Its purpose is to strengthen or improve the appearance of a tooth. A crown can:

  • restore a tooth when there isn’t enough tooth remaining to provide support for a large filling
  • attach a bridge to replace missing teeth
  • protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • restore a fractured tooth
  • cover a badly shaped or discolored tooth
  • cover a dental implant

Several steps are involved and two dental visits are needed to create a custom crown that looks natural and feels comfortable.

  • The tooth is prepared by removing its outer portion to accommodate the thickness of the crown.
  • An impression is made to provide an exact model of the prepared tooth so the laboratory technician can use the model to help develop the shape and size of the custom porcelain crown.
  • A temporary crown is placed on the tooth while the permanent crown is made. We work closely with the lab in order to get the best fit and color match possible.
  • When the permanent crown is ready, it is put into place and any necessary adjustments are made. When you and Dr. Logmann are satisfied with how it looks and feels, the custom porcelain crown is cemented in place. The beautifully natural look and feel will make it seem as though it has always been there.

Custom Bridges

A bridge is a dental restoration that replaces or spans the space where one or more teeth have been lost. The loss of a tooth may cause your mouth to “sink” from loss of bone that supported the tooth. Remaining teeth can also shift. The result may be lost function and a face that looks older than it should. A bridge helps support your lips and cheeks and helps maintain the natural shape of your face.

A fixed bridge is commonly cemented or bonded to the natural teeth next to the space left by the missing teeth. A false tooth (called a pontic) replaces the lost tooth or teeth. A pontic is attached to a crown (a restoration that covers a tooth). Crowns, which are cemented on natural teeth, provide support for the bridge. Bridges are made from metal, porcelain or a combination of both. Dr. Logmann considers the appearance and function of the bridge and can discuss the materials best suited for you.

In some instances, a resin bonded fixed bridge (sometimes called a “Maryland Bridge”) can be used. It is attached by a special procedure called bonding, and it doesn’t require the use of crowns or extensive tooth preparation.

A removable bridge (sometimes called a removable partial denture) can be taken out of the mouth for cleaning. This type of bridge has replacement teeth attached to gum colored plastic bases connected by metal framework. The partial attaches to your natural teeth with metal clasps or a device called a precision attachment.

Custom Veneers/Lumineers

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are fabricated with the help of our dental laboratory. They generally cover the tops and front of teeth. Veneers can be used to whiten teeth as well as correct problems like chipped, misshapen, crooked, or worn teeth.

Porcelain Veneers are custom created to precisely fit your teeth. On your first visit Dr. Logmann will carefully remove a thin layer of enamel, and then an impression of your teeth will be made. Our dental lab use these impressions to build a model of your teeth, then create the custom veneers on that model. Dr. Logmann and you will choose the best veneer shape and color for your smile. At your next appointment, your veneers will be bonded into place permanently with special cement that is hardened with a high-intensity light. Once they are in place, veneers virtually become part of your teeth. Your final result is a more beautiful, natural looking new smile.

Root Canals—Endodontics

Root canal therapy treats disorders in the nerve (pulp) of the tooth. It can save a tooth whose pulp, which contains its nerves and blood supply, is diseased or damaged. Pulp disease usually means that the tooth will be lost unless something is done to save it. Root canal therapy involves replacing the diseased pulp with a substance that will keep the tooth functional.

A damaged or diseased tooth will not heal by itself. Without treatment, the infection will spread, bone around the tooth will begin to degenerate, and the tooth could fall out.

Root canal treatment (endodontics) is about saving teeth, rather than removing them. In the past, the only way to treat teeth with disease was to pull them. This is not the case today. Now, thanks to modern dental techniques, we are able to save damaged teeth more than ninety percent of the time.

A root canal is done by first removing the diseased pulp, leaving the canal intact. The canal or canals will be rinsed out, and a medication will be placed inside the canal. The canal will then be sterilized and filled with a permanent material. Root canals may take two appointments, however, many can be done with a single visit.

Bonding

Bonding involves the artistic placement of a tooth-colored plastic material to front teeth to enhance their color, shape or size. You can have one tooth re-created with bonding, or we can transform your entire smile! Bonding can be a less expensive alternative to veneers; however, veneers will usually last longer and retain their color better.

Bonding is a comfortable procedure that can provide dramatic results. Dr. Logmann will carefully prepare your teeth, roughen them with a mildly acidic solution, then place, sculpt and polish the bonding material.

Sealants

A sealant is a thin plastic coating that fills the grooves of molars and premolars. These grooves collect plaque, a film of food and bacteria. Toothbrush bristles usually can’t reach the plaque that accumulates within the grooves, and this can cause decay.

After we clean and dry the teeth, we apply a special solution that slightly roughens their surface. This increases the bond’s strength. We paint the sealant on, and then harden it with a harmless, high-intensity light, forming a protective shield against decay.

We recommend applying sealants to teeth as soon as the permanent molars come in, usually between the ages of 5-7 for the first molars, and between ages 11-14 for the second set of molars and premolars. As they wear out, the sealants should be replaced.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

  • Cover pits and grooves where bacteria and food lodge and cause tooth decay
  • Applied to those "hard-to-reach-teeth" that are more likely to collect plaque
in their deep and narrow pits
  • Can be effective up to 10 years
  • Cost effective. On average, the cost to apply a sealant is approximately
one-half to one-third the cost of filling a cavity in the tooth

Invisalign®—Clear Aligners

Invisalign treatment is the nearly invisible way to straighten your teeth! A series of custom made, nearly undetectable aligners move your teeth gradually. Only a doctor who has been trained and certified can treat using Invisalign treatment.

Dr. Logmann will create a treatment plan and take impressions as well as pictures of your teeth, which are submitted to Align Technology. Using the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, Align Technology carefully translates your doctor’s instructions into a series of precisely customized aligners. You then wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, moving your teeth, gradually-week by week, millimeter by millimeter—until you’ve achieved the intended result: straighter teeth.

Because there are no metal wires and brackets, Invisalign treatment is comfortable. And because it’s removable, eating, brushing, and flossing is no problem. You can still enjoy your favorite foods and smile without holding back. With Invisalign treatment, there’s nothing to hide!

Teeth Cleaning and Non-Surgical Gum Treatment with the Piezo Ultrasonic Scale/Irrigation System

The Piezo System is a high-tech system that utilizes ultrasound to super clean between your teeth and under the gum line (more effective and comfortable than traditional sharp instruments). Desensitizing and warmed medical solutions can be irrigated throughout the mouth to sooth and heal.

The Piezo System is a closed multi-fluid system that eliminates the possibility of contamination. Disposable equipment is used wherever possible and non-disposable components are heat sterilized after each patient.

According to the American Dental Association, 75 percent of all adults over age 35 have some form of periodontal disease. Because periodontical disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, the Piezo system is Dr. Logmann’s choice for excellent cleaning of the teeth as well as preventing, controlling, and treating gum disease.

At Home Teeth Whitening

At home teeth whitening utilizes a whitening gel that is dispensed into soft plastic trays that are inserted into your mouth and over your teeth. The gel gradually whitens the tooth enamel over a series of days. Bonding, crowns and bridges will not bleach.

Research has shown that a dentist-supervised, at home whitening system is the most popular way to achieve a white smile.

Dr. Logmann will first take an impression of your teeth to create a custom bleaching tray. When you receive the bleaching trays, you will also receive the whitening gel you have chosen and our assistants will instruct you on how to use it. We offer several bleaching gels; some that are worn during the day and some during the night. Our most popular system is called the “Turbo” system and works within 2-3 days. Because smoking, coffee, tea, and colas can darken teeth, we can provide you with touch-up kits to be used six months to a year later to bring your teeth color back up to their maximum whiteness.

"The Wand"—no syringe computer controlled anesthetic

The “Wand” is the latest high-tech replacement for the traditional needle and syringe “shot.” The "Wand" is a small hand piece that looks like a pen. It is a computer controlled delivery system and works by applying a drop of anesthetic before it ever touches your gums.

We know that some patients get more nervous than others at the sight of a needle and syringe, so using the wand helps provide a more comfortable experience. You may not even experience the lingering numb feeling as with a typical injection. This system is excellent for children as well as those adults that have had less than ideal experiences in the past. Dr. Logmann uses the “Wand” exclusively, and feels it provides a stress free and more comfortable start to a procedure.

Children's Dental Care

Children can sit at our play table while watching a family member get their teeth cleaned. It is a great introduction to dental health and helps to take away any apprehensions the child may have. The use of the “Wand” (replaces needle and syringe shots) and the”KCP” (more comfortable air-abrasion that replaces the drill) makes our dental care gentle and more easily tolerated. Child-friendly staff and a fully stocked toy chest also make dental visits easier for our “little patients.”

Copernius all-in-one Digital Imaging System

The Copernius all-in-one hi-tech digital imaging system utilizes a tiny pen-size camera inside your mouth so Dr. Logmann can show you any broken fillings, gum problems, or cracks. With this system Dr. Logmann can give you a live “guided tour” of your mouth on our in-room monitor as he explains treatment options.

The system is also used to take photos for patient records and insurance purposes, capture intra-oral images, and view informational and instructional videos. You’ll see precisely what Dr. Logmann sees, so you’ll better understand your condition and treatment options. The system can often reveal a problem while it’s relatively simple to treat. A picture is worth a thousand words!

Dental Nitrous Oxide—Laughing Gas

Nitrous Oxide is a gas that is mixed in small amounts with oxygen and breathed in to produce a calm and relaxed feeling during your dental procedure.

Dr. Logmann has nitrous oxide available to calm our more anxious patients. The gas is delivered throughout the procedure, but doesn’t numb the teeth, therefore it may be used in combination with a local anesthetic as well.

Pure oxygen is administered at the conclusion of your procedure to rid any remaining nitrous oxide and give you a refreshed feeling.

Laser Decay Diagnosis
What is Laser Decay Diagnosis?

Among the newest technologies is a small laser instrument called the DIAGNOdent, which scans your teeth with harmless laser light, searching for hidden decay.

This unique instrument provides instant feedback on the health of the tooth. A pen-like probe simply glides over the tooth surfaces constantly checking the tooth. A number scale and an alarm signals the operator when there are signs of decay. This new technology is completely safe and pain free. DIAGNOdent is a major breakthrough that allows Dr Logmann to monitor the areas below the hard surfaces of the teeth. The DIAGNOdent allows Dr. Logmann and our hygienists to locate hidden decay, and with treatment stop the spread of disease before it destroys the tooth from within.
